We Are Legion (We Are Bob): Bobiverse, Book 1 (Audiobook)

We Are Legion (We Are Bob) is book one of the Bobiverse series.  The book is written by Dennis Taylor and the audiobook is narrated by Ray Porter.  The book is a wonderfully witty and wacky science fiction story that does a fantastic job of balancing the amount of humor and seriousness.  For me, I was captivated by the book’s opening chapter and it never let go until the book ended.  Because it is a series, be prepared to use a second credit right away on the next book, it is now available.  I believe there are only two books planned in the series, however there are many storylines that could spur future books within the same universe.   Not only are you in for good Science Fiction, but you will find you are also thrown into a world full of science fun.  I highly recommend this book and understand why it was nominated for so many awards.

The publisher’s summary provides you a quick impression of the book’s opening chapters, but this is only a very small portion of a much greater journey that will draw you in.  This is where the fun begins. I found the premise of the story unique and often light-hearted.   As others have stated, I too found myself laughing out loud in public while listening.  However, the book contains a fair number of scenes that will pull on your heart and keep you grounded.  In a series where it could have been loaded will slapstick and puns, this book stand out among the others because it includes great humor but does so without sacrificing depth and complexity.

The book could be enjoyed my nearly any age reader, however some of the humor will be over the head of younger audiences.  The book also contained about three (as many as I counted) vulgar words, and at times I was not sure they were there.  I was very impressed and must give the author credit for being able to write a modern science fiction story where the characters are not swearing every other sentence; thank you.  There are a few small scenes where one experiences some graphic violence which may be difficult for younger audiences.   The book itself is not classified as Young or Young Adult, but it could be enjoyed by both as long as you understand the above mentioned caveats.

Ray Porter’s narration was the perfect complement to this great story.  He did an exceptional job narrating the many different characters, and Bobs, found within its pages.  He read the book with passion and the proper about of inflection.  The speed at which the book was read seemed a bit slower then I prefer, but this is a very subjective critique.  With over two-hundred and sixty books narrated on Audible, at the time of this review, it is no surprise that the audio is top-notch.  Ray Porter, as with the many other books I have listened to which he narrated, this one was also skillfully done.  The audio had not noticeable artifacts (swallows, background noise, volume issues, etc.)

If you are someone who like deep complex space operas, this book may not be for you. Instead, if you are looking for a light-hearted science fiction tale containing humor, action, scheming, Bobs and so much more, this is the book for you.  The only issue I can see with this book is if you liked it, the second one will need to be waiting in your library as your next listen.  Plan accordingly.
